NASCAR Billet Bladder
Plate & Cable Driven Fuel Pump
Effective at the start of the 2004
NASCAR Cup, Busch, and Truck seasons, NASCAR has allowed an
alternative fuel pump to the rule book. This rule # 20B-16.5.2 allows the use
of a fuel pump mounted in the
trunk area, to be driven by a cable off of the oil pump. Waterman Racing has
produced a Billet Aluminum Bladder Plate Assembly complete with vent
and filler cages, also of billet aluminum. These units are of a modular
design and all parts are
replaceable if damaged. The plate
was designed with the Waterman fuel pump in mind. Complete with a mounting pad
for the fuel pump, this plate also allows both the air vent as well as the
fill tube to be swiveled to the desired direction before being
locked in position. Both the air vent and the fuel filler neck are available
in either a straight or 90 degree design. The
idea of mounting the pump on the bladder plate is not a new concept as most
USAC Silver Crown dirt, as well
as pavement cars are already utilizing a cable driven fuel pump system. The main
reason for moving the fuel pump to the rear of the car is quite obvious, with
the pump no longer mounted on the block just
behind the A arm, the chances of the pump or the attached fuel lines being
knocked off in an incident are greatly reduced. The fact that the
fuel pump is no longer attached to the engine block reduces the chance of
vapor loc resulting from extreme
heat being transferred to the pump from both the block & the
headers. Remember that the fuel
pump is being driven by the oil pump, should you have a belt failure, the
engine will quit, reducing the
possibility of major engine damage. However, one of the most important facts
is when you run out of fuel with a block mounted fuel
pump, the pump will no longer draw any fuel from the 12 + feet of - 10 line
going to the carburetor. The
Waterman Bladder Plate mounted fuel pump will evacuate most of the 65
ounces left in the line thus extending the run by that much in mileage. This
bladder plate assembly has been inspected by the NASCAR Research &
Development Center & meets the rules as described in the 2004 NASCAR rule
book. Waterman Billet Bladder Plates will fit on any ATL or Fuel Safe NASCAR
approved fuel cell.
Testing on the complete assembly is currently being done by RCR, Hendricks
, Evernham as well as Gibbs
Racing.
